MOVERS BEHIND ACCRA METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY RESPOND TO NATIONAL DUTY

By Ebenezer T. Hanson

“The heights by great men reached and kept

Were not attained by sudden flight,

But they, while their companions slept,

Were toiling upward in the night.”

— Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

The remarkable strides Accra Metropolitan University is making in Ghana’s educational landscape are neither a fluke nor mere hype. The selection of two of its principal officers for national assignments is a testament to the institution’s growing influence and impact.

The distinguished individuals in focus are His Royal Majesty Nene Drolor Bosso Adamtey I, Chair of the University Council, and Prof. Mrs. Goski Alabi, Co-Founder and President of the University. Nene Adamtey I has been elected as a Member of the Council, representing the Greater Accra Region, while Prof. Mrs. Alabi has been appointed to an eight-member National Education Forum committee by President John Dramani Mahama. This committee is tasked with organizing a national dialogue to gather Ghanaians’ perspectives on the challenges and solutions within the education sector.

These two distinguished leaders, along with other members of the University Council, have provided visionary and strategic leadership since the university’s inception in 2015. Initially established as Laweh Open University, it later evolved into Laweh University College under the mentorship of the Open University of Tanzania. On December 19, 2024, the institution achieved a significant milestone by receiving its Presidential Charter, officially becoming Accra Metropolitan University with the authority to award its own degrees and certificates.

Nene Adamtey I and Prof. Mrs. Alabi bring to their new national assignments a wealth of experience, deep insights, and relevant expertise. Nene Adamtey I, known in private life as Dr. Kingsley Fletcher, is the Suapolor (traditional leader) of the Se (Shai) Traditional Area in Ghana. His contributions span both Ghana and the international stage. He is the founding pastor of Life International in Durham, North Carolina, and has served as a special advisor to the Assistant Secretary-General and Director of the United Nations Development Program for Africa.

He was the first Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), where he played a pivotal role in advancing educational initiatives. His leadership extends into the corporate world, having held positions such as Chairman of FirstBanc Financial Services Ltd and Fletcher Holdings International. Beyond leadership, he is a published author, with works focused on leadership and personal development.

Prof. Mrs. Alabi is a professor of Quality Management and Leadership in Higher Education. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a Diploma in Education from the University of Cape Coast, an M.Phil. in Food Science from the University of Ghana, a Doctor of Business Administration from the Swiss Management Centre, and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the Central University of Nicaragua.

She was the founding Dean of the School of Graduate Studies at UPSA, where she significantly increased student enrollment. She also served as the Dean of the Centre for International Education and Collaboration at UPSA. With over 70 scholarly publications, she has been instrumental in establishing leadership centers in Ghana. Additionally, she holds key positions, including serving as the West African Representative for the African Council for Distance Education and the Board Chairperson of the African Network for the Internationalization of Education.

The appointment of these two visionary leaders to national roles underscores the credibility and expertise within Accra Metropolitan University. Their contributions to education and leadership continue to shape Ghana’s academic landscape, reinforcing the university’s mission to drive quality education and national development.
