The philosophy of the MSc in Security and Intelligence programme is scholarly-practitioner oriented which focus on developing the capacity of participants to think both holistic and critical in solving security issues. The programme promotes a learner-centred, problem-based, and practice-oriented approach. In a rapidly evolving global security environment marked by terrorism, cyber threats, transnational crime, political instability, and intelligence failures, there is an urgent need for well-rounded leaders who can think strategically, act ethically, and respond decisively.

Programme Summary

Admission Requirements – Local Applicants

  • Applicants with a bachelor’s degree from any recognized university may apply.


Admission Requirements – International Applicants

  • International applicants may be admitted based on qualifications from their home country universities, for which equivalence shall be determined by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) of Ghana and submitted to the University.
  • Students from non-English speaking countries will be required to have evidence of proficiency in the English language.

Additional requirements for admission will include: 

  1. Full completion of an admission application form.
  2. Payment of the appropriate application fee;
  • Copies of certified academic certificates and transcripts.
Components of the programme:

This section provides details of the curriculum and mode of delivery for the MSc programme.

(a) Required (Core) course (s)

Students enrolling in the programme will take the following nine (9) mandatory/core courses:

  1. Security Studies
  2. Regional Security and Geopolitics
  3. Intelligence, Ethics and Governance
  4. Security Threat and Risk Assessment
  5. Research Methods in Security and Intelligence
  6. Intelligence Management
  7. Cybersecurity and Information Warfare
  8. Intelligence, Strategic Decision-Making and Policy
  9. Insurgency, Terrorism, Transnational organized crime and countermeasures

 

(b) Elective course (s):

There are five (5) elective courses. Students are required to choose one (1). These are:

  1. Digital Forensics
  2. Cyber Law and Ethics
  3. Maritime Security / Border Security / Economic Intelligence
  4. Transnational organized crime and Terrorism
  5. Intelligence Management and Security Sector Reforms

(c)  Mandatory and Optional Course(s)

All 27 credit  hour core courses in section 14(a) are mandatory for all students who enroll on the programme. Students are required to select one (1) elective course in section 14(b).

(d) Research component

Research dissertation is not a requirement for graduation. However, students have the option to add a 6-credit hour dissertation

 

Target Market and Employability

11.1 Target Market

The target market for the programme shall be personnel within the security services, academics, professionals, civil servants, media personel, and politicians.

 11.2 Employment prospects

The Graduates from this programme will acquire employable skills directly required in all sectors of the economy such as security services, such as the Fire Service, Police, Prisons, and Army. Graduates of the programme are envisaged to be needed in the following sectors, but not limited to the following:

  • Consultancy and Advisory role in all firms
  • Public Administration
  • International Organizations.
  • Ministries Departments and Agencies
  • Research Institutions
  • Private organizations
